Double the Fun at Marist as Red Foxes Sweep the Night

POUGHKEEPSIE , NY –  It was a good night to be a Red Fox in Poughkeepsie as both the Women’s and Men’s basketball teams picked up wins Wednesday night at the McCann Arena.   The Men edged out Colgate 78-76 and the Women snapped a six game losing streak with a 64-42 win over Rhode Island.

The Red Fox Men’s team led by as much as 19 in the second half before Colgate took the lead in the final minutes, but Marist re-claimed the lead for good on a three-pointer by junior forward Isaiah Lamb with 49 seconds to go.

Marist led 78-76 with 0.6 seconds left with an inbounds pass underneath its own basket. Colgate’s Sean O’Brien stole the ball near half-court, and then drained a shot at the buzzer that was initially called good on the floor, which would have given Colgate a 79-78 win. After a review of approximately five minutes, the shot was waved off, and Marist prevailed.

Junior guard Brian Parker led the Red Foxes with 16 points. Sophomore center Tobias Sjoberg set a career high in scoring with 14 points, and also set a career high with nine rebounds.

This was the first game this season Marist led at halftime, and the 46 points was the Red Foxes’ highest output in a first half this season.

“I kidded with my team in the locker room that they’re trying to kill me,” head coach Mike Maker said. “I’m 52 and I have a five-year-old; I’d like to live a lot longer. We sure did make it interesting at the end, but I’m proud of my guys because it’s been a lot of uphill sledding for us and we played beautiful basketball for 30 minutes. We haven’t learned how to play with a lead; we hadn’t had many like this.”

Marist is 2-7 and hosts Stetson at the McCann Arena on Saturday with a 1 p.m. tip off.

Earlier in the evening the Marist women’s basketball team picked up a 64-42 home win over University of Rhode Island thanks to a strong second half effort.  The Red Foxes took their first double digit lead with in the third quarter three from Hannah Hand, which sparked a third quarter offensive explosion that included an 18-0 run. The Red Foxes finished with 20 points in the quarter pulling away from a Rhode Island team that had no answer for Marist in the second half.

Maura Fitzpatrick led all scorers with 16 points, 10 coming in the second half.  The Red Foxes were excellent from the free point line in the first half, going 16-for-18.  Marist’s bench provided a good offensive boost, scoring 26 points.

The Marist Women return to action with a Saturday road game at Boston University with tip off set for 2 p.m.
