WICCOPEE, NY – In the first meeting of the season between rivals Ketcham and John Jay, the Indians were led by the tandem attack of the “M&M” Boys, Mike Mignone and Nick Murray. In Saturday’s rematch, Ketcham’s big men Alpha Bangura and Sean Reilly carried the boys to a 59-52 victory, with the help of Nick Murray’s five three pointers.
“I thought the game got away from us when we lost track of Nick Murray late in the third quarter”, reflected John Jay head coach Terry Feeley. Murray hit three of his five long rangers in that third quarter to give Ketcham the separation it would need to stay ahead of the Patriots for the remainder of the game.
Murray finished the game with 14 points.
6’5″ sophomore teammate Alpha Bangura led the Indians with a game high 16 points and 6’3″senior forward, Sean Reilly, had 14 points. “We typically run with our small guards, but it was good to see Alpha and Sean get those points in the paint for us”, said Ketcham head coach Matt Paino.
“It meant so much to win tonight,” said Bangura. “We always lost to Jay when I was in junior high and JV”.
John Jay lost one of its leading scorers, Aiden Hilderbrand early in the first quarter. It appeared that he hyper extended his knee while working for a rebound under the Ketcham basket. Hilderbrand was helped off the court and sat on the sidelines with his knee iced for the remainder of the game.
Brady Hilderbrand and Isaiah Tullo led the charge for John Jay. Tullo finished as Jay’s high scorer for the third game in a row. Tullo finished this game with 15 points, B. Hilderbrand had 14 points with two three pointers.
Junior Guard Mike Scarpelli came off the bench and provided Jay with quality minutes in the absence of Aiden Hilderbrand. Scarpelli factored in a number of key assists throughout the contest.
Both Ketcham and John Jay are 8-8 on the season.
