WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY – The first Ketcham vs John Jay girls match up of the season will be hard to top. While these two teams will face each other one more time during the regular season, (Tuesday Jan 23rd) it will take a lot to match the excitement and thrills that this first meeting provided this past Saturday overtime 65-60 game at Ketcham high school.
John Jay started off strong, leading 11-2 in the early goings, but Ketcham came back behind a 36 point performance from Katie Wall. The two teams battled back and forth for the lead but wound up tied at 56 at the end of regulation.
Jay struck first in the OT when Nicole Mussachio hit a three pointer. Musacchio led Jay with 29 points. But a specially designed play worked to perfection for Ketcham. While the defense was focused on the high scoring Katie Walls at the top of the key, Mya Smith was all alone right under the basket. The pass was made to Smith who shot the layup and got fouled in the process. A three point play that Smith converted when she swished the foul shot, giving Ketcham a 3 point lead with 6.3 seconds remaining in overtime.
Jay’s final possession ended up as either a broken play or an errant pass. Either way, the ball bounced towards the basket and over the end line, giving Ketcham possession. The game closed out with a 65-60 final.
