KINGSTON, NY – The defending Section 9 Class B champs get a chance to defend again. The Huguenots of New Paltz beat Spackenkill 35-17 on Saturday at Dietz Stadium and will once again face Marlboro in the championship game this Friday night at Middletown High School at 7 p.m.
Jimmy Verney led the way for New Paltz against the Spartans amassing 180 yards and two TDs. Mike Pisciotta ran a 58 yard touchdown. Axel Rodriquez scored from 48 yards out on a pass from Verney, and Kenny Verney also scored with a 41 yard touchdown run.
Dhyquem Lewinson did the majority of scoring for the Spartans with two TD runs. Soccer player Joey Guerriero nailed a 23 yard field goal in the 2nd quarter.
New Paltz and Marlboro match ups have become a “thing” in the past two years. The Huguenots beat the Iron Dukes twice last season – once in regular season play and once for the Sectional title. Marlboro won the first meeting of this season back on October 13th with a 21-7 win on the New Paltz home field.
Marlboro had to come from behind to defeat Liberty in the other Class B semi final game – and remains undefeated at 8-0. New Paltz is 8-1.
The last meeting between New Paltz and Marlboro was a defensive battle in which two high powered offenses that averaged 30-40 points per game were held to just 21 and 7. New Paltz did a good job containing Marlboro’s two big running threats Phil DeSantis and John Perugino. Each had one major break away. The Huguenots will definitely be working on mental mistakes this week as New Paltz suffered costly errors each time the team was in or approaching the red zone.
