HVNN Studios, Wappingers Falls, NY- The Pine Plains Bombers will play in the NYS Class C Final Four softball tournament this weekend in South Glens Falls. It’s the perfect topping to an already incredible sports year for girls athletics at Pine Plains. The volleyball, basketball, and softball teams have all won sectional titles this school year.
The Bombers will face Greenville in the semi finals, beginning at 9 a.m on Saturday morning. Bishop Kearny and Sandy Creek will play in the other semi final game at 9:00 a.m.
Ava Fitzmaurice is the pitching sensation for Greenville. The 5’6″ junior, who also plays on the basketball team, one hit St. Lawrence in the regional finals this past weekend. According to the stats on Maxpreps.com, Fitzmaurice has pitched 125 innings with 181 strikeouts. She has a big wind up, an array of pitches, and wears a face mask.
Bombers catcher Cat Simmons knows Greenville’s star pitcher quite well.
“I caught her last year in travel ball; we were on the same team”, said the junior tri-captain who has been on the high school varsity team since 9th grade. Simmons is expecting a serious fastball, with a good change up to follow it up. “I know she’s been working on some other pitches”.
Pine Plains has plenty of weapons and plenty of hitters. Haley Strang, Cat Simmons, Alex Mackenzie, and Jo Schmidt are among them. The Bombers are carrying just two seniors with a bunch of sophomores, as well as a 7th & 8th grader.
The Greenville Spartans have three seniors and a group of younger players as well, including a couple of freshman.
Last year, Pine Plains won the sectional title but got knocked out in the regional semis against Section One champ, North Salem. Leading 6-5 heading into the top of the 7th, North Salem scored two runs to take a 7-6 lead and shut down the Bombers in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the win.
This year’s regional semi final game was a cake walk for Pine Plains, beating Haldane 14-0. The regional final game, against East Rockaway, was another nail biter. Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the 7th, East Rockaway’s Emily Chilius smacked a two run homer to tie the game and force extra innings. Pine Plains scored when Tia Fumasoli scored the winning run on a passed ball.
The winners of the 9:00 a.m. semi final on Saturday, will play for the state title at 1:30 p.m.
