WAPPINGERS FALLS – It’s one of the most thrilling plays in baseball; the play at the plate. Arlington played it perfectly for a come from behind 5-4 win over Ketcham Saturday in the first round of the Section 1 baseball playoffs.
Ketcham has beaten Arlington in their last seven meetings including twice this season, and with an early four nothing lead it looked like the Indians would make it eight in a row, but Arlington had a flair for the dramatics and made this one a “game to remember”.
The Admirals came back with a five run 5th inning to take a 5-4 lead into the final inning. Rob Fratarcangeli come in to relieve Arlington starter Kevin Besko, but Ketcham still had some life. With one on, and two outs, Bryce Mordecki sends a shot to left that hit off Mike Bulgai’s glove and then the top of the fence. The ball bounced back onto the field and while Bulgai was gathering the ball for the relay, Simon Corby was racing around third from first base to score the tying run. Bulgai hit shortstop Linwood Burke who turned and fired a rocket to Arlington catcher Austin Zakow. The ball was a little high and to the right as Corby was hustling down the third base line for home.
Zakow went out and caught the ball then dove towards home to tag Corby out at the plate for the final out of the game and then it was an Admiral pandemonium that carried from where the pay was made at home plate to the infield where Bulgai and Burke were coming off the field.
Arlington moves on to the next round against another Dutchess County foe, John Jay, on Monday at Jay.
