SAUGERTIES, NY – The Saugerties boys basketball team jumped out to a 24-12 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in the team’s 72-63 win in the Shane Giesler Memorial Tournament finals on Friday.
Dior Johnson led the Sawyers with 22 points. Tavin Bell and Dustin Curlin each scored 16. Saugerties had a 40-28 lead at halftime, but Jay managed to claw its way back to make it a 2 point game with 2 minutes remaining, thanks to a collective effort of scoring. Unfortunately for Jay, shots weren’t falling when they needed to, down the home stretch.
“I was real proud of their effort today.” said Jay head coach Terry Feeley. “We had a bunch of kids playing some positions and taking on some responsibilities they haven’t done in the past. I thought Rafael (Figereo) and Marcus (Mejorado) did a nice job of containing Johnson and keeping his offense to something manageable.”
Both Figereo and Mejorado were called up from JV.
Justin Long led the Patriots with 21 points while teammate Alex Mackey had 18.
Saugerties was a perfect 5-5 from the foul line. Both teams hit a total of seven three-pointers.
Saugerties hosts Highland on Tuesday at 5:30pm. Jay preps for the post season Sectional tournament with out bracket games on Wednesday.
