MIDDLETOWN, NY – All roads to the Class B Section 9 title pointed to this rematch as the Malboro Iron Dukes and New Paltz Huguenots battled, once again, for the Section 9 Class B title. It’s nothing new between these two team, two of the best football programs in a very talented and competitive Class B division of Section 9 football. With some great matchups between the two programs over the years, this 27-25 win by Marlboro was the best one yet.
New Paltz jumped out first with a quick score in the first quarter when Mike Pisciotta ran 44 yards on New Paltz’s first possession of the game. An important score for the Huguenots to try and set the tone by striking first after a 21-7 loss to the Iron Dukes in the final game of the regular season.
Marlboro came right back with the help of a pass interference call, setting up good field position for the Iron Dukes. Quarterback Sam Mongelli hit Muhammed Banks on a 21 yarder to even things up at 7.
Mongelli showed his athletic lineage when he dodged a sack and then fired a strike to Zack Bayon for a 23 yard TD. Marlboro led 14-7. Mongelli’s older brother Nick was a standout sports star at Marlboro and their father, a professional softball player.
New Paltz marched down the field towards the end of the first half but had to settle for a 27 yard field goal by Dan Drewnowski to make it 14-10, and then another field goal off the foot of Drewnowski to close out the first half with Marlboro leading 14-13.
The Iron Dukes, who won the coin toss and deferred to receiving in the second half took advantage when Mongelli ran a sweep for a 10 yarder just one and a half minutes into the second half. The extra point failed, putting Marlboro ahead on the scoreboard 20-13 in the third quarter.
Jimmy Verney broke a 65 yard TD run just as the third quarter ended. The extra point was no good and we were back to a one pint game, 20-19 Marlboro.
In the fourth quarter, Mongelli was at it again. A three yard score puts the Iron Dukes ahead 27-19.
Later in the 4th, Pisciotta picked up 48 yards bringing the ball down to the 15 yard line. From there, Verney scored on a 3 yard run making it 27-25. New Paltz went for the two point conversion but Verney’s attempt to Axel Rodriguez was thrown just high,
Marlboro wins it’s 6th Class B title in the past 7 years with a 27-25 thrilling win over New Paltz.
