On Sunday, January 28th at SUNY New Paltz and on Saturday, February 3rd at Dutchess Community College, a total of 16 local boy’s high school basketball teams will participate in the 6th annual Officials vs. Cancer basketball tournament.
The Officials vs. Cancer Tourney will feature 8 great match-ups of local high school teams and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society’s fight against a horrific disease that affects all of us in some way, shape or form.
Referee Kevin O’Connor is a cancer survivor and said, “As a former Past President of IAABO Board 114, our local referee association, I am proud that our organization will once again host this tournament to raise funds.”
While the Officials vs Cancer Tournament is a national initiative, here in the Hudson Valley, $60,000 has been raised for the American Cancer Society in the first five years of the local tournament with referees donating their time and services to the cause.
Officials vs. Cancer was started in 2008 and supports the American Cancer Society. All monies that are donated are tracked, process through the American Cancer Society headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and then returned to the local ACS offices for the areas from which the donations were made. Since the inception of the program, over $1,000,000.00 has been donated to the American Cancer Society.
