Report from Marist Athletics
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women’s basketball team won its third game in a row Saturday night, defeating Monmouth 69-46 at the McCann Arena. Sophomore Alana Gilmer led the Red Foxes with a career high 27 points in the Red Foxes’ second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory. The Red Foxes now sit 6-8 overall and 2-0 in conference. The Hawks fall to 2-10 and 0-1 in conference play.
Marist used a 10-0 run to take a 17-11 lead in the first quarter. Maura Fitzpatrick and Rebekah Hand scored consecutive three pointers to bring the score to 23-13 early in the second quarter. Monmouth kept pace with Marist, getting within six points of the Red Foxes. Alana Gilmer made a jumper at the end of the quarter to close the half with Marist ahead 37-26.
The Red Foxes got things going in third quarter, as they went on an 8-2 run and forced Monmouth to burn a timeout with 6:44 remaining in the quarter. Monmouth responded with back to back scoring plays from Rosa Graham, cutting Marist’s lead to 45-33, but the Hawks could not slow the Red Foxes’ offense and were only able to muster five points in the fourth quarter.
In addition to scoring 27 points, Gilmer went a perfect five-for-five from the line. Maura Fitzpatrick (12) and Rebekah Hand (11) were the other two Red Foxes to score in double digits.
The five points Monmouth scored in the fourth quarter is the lowest Marist has held an opponent all season. Previously Marist has held Rhode Island and Rider to eight points in a quarter. 46 points is also the lowest Marist has held an opponent all season.
“Holding them to five in a quarter and having 20 assists on 28 baskets are things that you really like to see. I thought Alana had a great offensive game for us and did a much better job defensively and Grace in the last two games really got us going in the right direction.” -said Head coach Brian Giorgis.
The Red Foxes will travel to Saint Peter’s on Thursday, January 4th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
