A Senior Night To Remember at Marist

Marist tops Quinnipiac 87-74 behind Hart’s 28 points in his final home game.


POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men’s basketball team won a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup against Quinnipiac, 87-74, on Feb. 23. The win improved Marist to 8-22 overall and 5-14 in conference play while Quinnipiac moved to 10-19 overall and 7-12 in MAAC competition.


Seniors Khallid Hart and Kentrall Brooks were honored before the game during the team’s annual Senior Night ceremony. Hart finished his home career as the high scorer for the Red Foxes, tallying 28 points and also put up four rebounds and four assists. Brooks posted six points, two boards and a block.

Sophomore Ryan Funk dropped 12 points in 38 minutes for Marist.


Both sides had early success scoring in the paint, with the Red Foxes receiving equal contribution from their starters and off the bench. Sophomore Isaiah Lamb slammed down an alley-oop from Richie Mitchell at the 11:53 mark of the first half to put Marist ahead 13-12.


The two teams traded baskets throughout the stanza and the Red Foxes’ defense was able to limit the Bobcats’ opportunities and force eight turnovers. Hart attacked the basket in the first half, finding himself at the free throw line 11 times and converting on nine of those chances. He also added two successful three-point shots to earn 19 first half points. Junior Connor McClenaghan’s  putback dunk added two of Marist’s 18 points in the paint and helped put the team up 41-35 going into the second half. The Red Foxes made 14 of their 31 shots (.450) and went 4-for-10 (.400) from three-point range.


Sophomore David Knudsen opened up scoring in the second half with a three-pointer for the Red Foxes followed shortly after by a dunk from Funk. The Red Foxes continued to force turnovers and hit shots from behind the arc with their largest lead stretching to 16 points.


Marist continued to stifle the Bobcats on defense, forcing four more turnovers for a total of 12 in the game. Junior Obi Momah had a strong contribution off the bench, adding 10 points and two rebounds in six minutes.


The Bobcats were able to cut their deficit to just eight points, but Lamb put an exclamation point on the game with a shot-clock beating dunk and the Red Foxes went ahead by 12.


Junior Chaise Daniels tallied 24 points to lead the Bobcats, which crashed the boards for 42 rebounds.

The Red Foxes shot 29-for-64 (.450) from the floor and 7-for-18 (.390) from three-point range. Marist protected the ball and scored 13 points off Quinnipiac turnovers.


The Red Foxes will finish the regular season with a road game at Siena on Sunday, February 26. Tip-off at the Times Union Center in Albany is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game will be carried by ESPN3 as part of the MAAC television package.
