VIDEO: Beacon Wears Down a Persistent Lourdes Squad

BEACON, NY –  It was an emotional start to the Beacon vs Lourdes boys basketball game Friday night.  The school recognized 1989 graduate and registered school nurse Donna Pederson who lost her battle with cancer on Dec 4, 2017.   The game was deemed a”Pink Out” night to honor Donna.

Beacon used it’s size, speed and physical play to outlast Lourdes 71-58, but didn’t really get any separation from the Warriors until the final quarter.
“Down only 2 after the first quarter and 3 at the half, we used an aggressive man to man defense specifically aimed at slowing down Aaron Davis, ” said Lourdes head coach Jim Santoro.
Davis is Beacon’s point guard and scoring catalyst and was held to 14 points thanks to the man-to-man defense by Warrior guards Chris Salotto and Tom Seipp.
While Davis was being shadowed all night, the Bulldogs fed their big man Jermond Galloway resulting in 26 points for the senior power forward.  For Lourdes it was a situation of picking its poison.
“Although Jemond is the toughest player Beacon has down low, our strategy was to prevent Davis from both feeding Jemond and scoring himself.”, reflected Santoro.
Lourdes received a 15 point performance from Joe Heavey with four 3-pointers, and another 15 from Tanner Broughton, who was the catalyst in Lourdes recent 62-61 win over Gorton.
“We were in the game right until the end, even down by 7 with 2 minutes to go.  Given the difference in the makeup of our rosters, I am extremely proud of how our team performed tonight.  Beacon is a very good team and we competed and fought the whole game.”, said Santoro.
