HIGHLAND – On a raw and cloudy October Thursday afternoon…no wait…It’s April! On what felt like a raw October day, the Highland Huskies hosted their cross town rivals, and red hot Marlboro Iron Dukes. Marlboro provided some early heat to the otherwise chilled afternoon with five quick runs in the first inning on its way to a 15-5 win and a perfect 5-0 record on the season.
It all started when the game’s lead off batter Mike Greco drew a walk off Highland’s starting pitcher Max Vidal. From there, the Iron Dukes played everything on the base paths aggressively. Head Coach John Morrissey called for a quick steal and Greco raced towards second in plenty of time. A few pitches later, Greco was on the move again and stole third; a perfect distance from home plate for the team’s RBI leader, Sam Mongelli.
Mongelli delivered with a single to left, and flood gates were open.
Then it was Mongelli’s turn to swipe some bases to put himself in position to score easily on a Mike Paolo single up the middle.
Later in the first with the bases loaded via a walk and hit batter, right handed hitter Eric Grzechowski goes the opposite way for a two run single. Marlboro built a 5-0 lead for starting pitcher Brendan Mahusky.
Highland’s first appearance on the scoreboard came in the bottom of the third when Matty Moliero drew a walk and Nik Turner, who had a base hit in his first at bat, hit a slow roller to second that Greco overran in his attempt to beat out the speedy Turner coming down the line.. Dylan Warren shot a base hit through the right side of the infield to score Moliero making it 5-1.
Mongelli and the Iron Dukes went on tear later in the game scoring 10 more runs behind a Mongelli three run homer for the 15-5 final.
Tyler Dequarto tripled and singled for the Huskies, producing two RBIs.
