BEACON, NY – The Millbrook Blazers boys basketball team had been on a tear, coming off the school’s first ever MHAL Championship and the Section 9 Class C championship, and the team leader, Humberto Cabrera wasn’t about to stop the momentum, scoring 33 of Millbrook’s 58 points in what turned out to be a 65-58 loss.
Cabrera scored 25 points in the first quarter of the NYS Regionals against Section 1 champ Alexander Hamilton.
Unfortunatley for Millbrook, the rest of the team only scored eight points in that same period. Meanwhile Alexander Hamilton was getting a good dose of offense contribution from several players, including senior guard CJ Harris who hit two three pointers in the second quarter to keep the Raiders within striking distance. Millbrook led 33-31 at halftime.
Alexander Hamilton came out of the halftime locker room on a 8 -0 run and the Red Raiders outscored the Blazers 19-12 in the third quarter. Attributing to the lead was the fact that Hamilton figured a way to slow Cabrera down and limited him to just two points in the third quarter. Additionally, The Raiders did an excellent job of defending Millbrook’s hottest player of late, Shane Sinon. Sinon was limited to just one free throw basket in the entire game. Teammate Jake Daley picked up some of the offense in the 3rd, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the game.
Hamilton had four players in double digits; Chris Green scored 15, Dan Barreva had 14, and CJ Harris finished with 13., and Dave Cousin had 10. Only Cabrera (33) and Daly (13) scored in double digits for the Blazers. Cabrera fouled out in the fourth quarter.
“I believe we’re a second half team”, said CJ Harris. “We knew Humberto was a great player and we had four fouls on him. We just wanted to get him that 5th foul and get him out of the game.”
After the game a somber Millbrook head coach, Bill Kyle, reflected on the season “Hopefully when they all wake up tomorrow they’ll realize everything they accomplished this year”, said Kyle. “A Millbrook team has never won a MHAL championship but these guys did that. We beat the #1 seed in Class B twice (Marlboro). Just a dedicated group of hard working kids”
Hamilton will face Section 11’s Greenport in the Region semi finals on Saturday at Pace University.
