BEACON, NY – The Haldane girls basketball team came into the NYS Regionals with a speedy offense and feisty defense, not much different than previous Haldane championship teams over the years. The challenge they faced this year was a mirror imaged team in Millbrook. The Blazers played like a well oiled and slightly taller team. The Section 9 Class Champs used their height advantage, defense, and ball distribution to disrupt Haldane’s rhythm leading to a 46-36 win in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday afternoon.
Erin Fox and Kate Daly handled the defensive boards, while Sam McKenna confused the Haldane defense as an outside threat and an inside presence. The game has its share of lead changes while both teams battled throughout the first half. Haldane took a slim 24-22 lead at the half. A second half run by Millbrook, coupled with a stellar defense to hold Haldane’s offense at bay gave the Blazers all the separation needed to move on in the tournament.
Erin Fox led Millbrook with 16 points. She also scored the 1000th point of her career at the start of the game. Sam McKenna had 15.
Millbrook will face Section 11 Class C Champ East Rockaway in a Regional Final game on Friday at 3 p.m. at SUNY New Paltz.
