HIGHLAND – The annual Black and Blue Bowl pits two high school football teams, Marlboro and Highland, just 11 miles apart in location but 42 points apart in the final score of Friday night’s match up.
As the home team, Highland scored first when Julian Meltz first connected with Max Vidal for a 58 yard pass. From there, Meltz scored from the 15. Marlboro answered right back when Phil DeSantis foreshadowed the kind of day he was going to have. DeSantis went north to south from the 15 yard line for the first of his four touchdowns on the day.
The Huskies weren’t phased and scored again late in the first quarter. Meltz got the ball from the shotgun and found a seam on the option that led him all the way to the end zone for his second TD of the night, but the last score for the Huskies.
Meanwhile, Marlboro was just heating up. Junior quarterback Sam Mongelli launched a perfect strike into the arms of John Perugino who never broke stride, despite carrying a defender on his back immediately after the catch. The 40 yard reception made it 20-12 in favor of the Iron Dukes.
Marlboro scored 48 unanswered points for a huge 54-12 win.
