MARLBORO – The James I. O’Neill Raiders have been working and waiting for this moment; the claiming of a Sectional lacrosse title. After two struggling seasons, the Raiders got their wish with a 15-6 win over Millbrook for the Class D Section 9 title.
“Last time we were here was 2007”, claimed junior middie Liam Ebner, “It feels good to see all the hard work pay off.
O’Neil jumped out to a 3-0 lead that turned into a 6-1 lead that turned into a 12-5 lead and eventually a 15-6 win. The Raiders were crisp and collected, winning ground balls and piling up the points with great passing and pinpoint shooting. Luke Kilner and Mitch Browne scored four goals each, Jack Kelly had 3, Brian Kelly scored twice, and Alex Evangelista and Derek Champi each scored a goal.
I’m really happy for the boys”, said head coach Nick LoRusso. “They worked really hard and we’re building for the future. O’Neill only has two seniors on this year’s team.
Millbrook received goals from Ryan Olmstead, Cory Homa, Lucas Rau, and Mike Pasquale and ends its season at 8-8.
O’Neill is 14-2 and will take on the Section 1 Champ Wednesday night at Dietz Stadium.
