HIGHLAND FALLS – Overtime football for Spackenkill and James I. O’Neill as the Raiders come back with 16 unanswered points to force the extra time.
Spackenkill rattled off 16 straight points before O’Neill got on the board, but the Raiders found a way to slow down the Spackenkill offense and score 16 points with critical two-point conversions. Down 16-8, O’Neill quarterback Luke Kilner ran a 42 yard keeper into the end zone with just 29 seconds left in regulation. The Raiders needed the two point conversion to tie it up, and got it.
In the overtime O’Neill won first possession and settled for a 42 yard field goal from Andrew Bagley that hit the goal post cross bar, bounced up, and fell on the other side of the post for the 3-pointer. Spackenkill was down 19-16 when Dhyquem Lewinson ran the ball 14 1/2 yards from the 15 yard line. From there, the Spartans offensive line pushed hard enough to allow quarterback Adam Loughran the chance to cross the goal line on the keeper giving Spackenkill six points and a 22-19 win to clinch their Class B division and affording them a bye in next week’s first round of sectional playoffs.
